Steven is found by the owner of a Southern plantation when he spots the slaves trying to hide something. After some 'persuasion' the slaves finally admit they found the baby abandoned in the fields and since the plantation owner has no children of his own decides to adopt him. Steven growns up living the good life of the privileged as the only child of the wealthy plantation owner. Then when he's 19 the Civil War breaks out. Anxious to defend Dixie land, Steven joins the confederate army, where he's taken by his uncle, General Robert E. Lee, to be his aid. To his dismay he's never allowed to see some action because his uncle tries to protect his brother's only child.
At the end of the war he goes home. Within a year of returning home, he marries his childhood sweet heart. They live happily married for 5 years before she gets sick with tuberculosis and dies. The end comes faster than expected and Steven could never forgive himself for not being there at the end but away on Ku Klux Klan business. After a three year grieving period his parents convince him to marry a rich plantation heiress they picked out for him. They remain childless for five years until his wife gets pregnant and Steven is excited to finally be a father.
He gets the disappointment of his life at his wife's delivery, the baby is black, he can't be his, so he's glad they both die within a few hours of each other, since he had decided to kill both.
At the grave side service for his wife and the baby, Steven notices a lone black man at the back. This black man is crying more than even his wife's mother. And that's all the clue he needs to suspect him and after the funeral he goes to question him. After some 'delicate' questioning, the man admits that he had slept with Steven's wife regularly when she came down to his side of town for her charity work, claiming that the two of them were in love.
At the next gathering of the KKK Steven arranges to have the black guy who slept with his sife lynched. Though he tries to conceal the facts, he's unable to hide them for long and his friends at the KKK end up finding out everything. And shortly there after the teasing and taunts begin, about how Steven couldn't show up a black in bed.
When the truth about the baby's father comes out to the genaral public, Steven's father dies of a massive heartattack from the shock. His mother does not longer survive her husband pinning away after him. The only thing Steven has left to live for is the lynching of other blacks, to show them all who is the superior race. After a year of teasing and taunts about his wife and wife's lover, Steven can't take it anymore. The lynching of blacks that he has lived for since his wife's death, is no longer enough to sustain him. So Steven does the only reasonable thing a man can do. He puts his revolver into his mouth and pulls the trigger.
Steven awakes at his burial viewing to the sound of people he neither likes or cares about laughing at how he killed himself because his wife wanted a black man instead of him. Furious and not even truly aware of what he's doing, Steven leaps from the coffin and in a blinding rage kills everyone there. To hide what happened, Steven sets fire to his family house and razes it to the ground. To make it look like blacks were behind it, he also sets fire to several other buldings on his property. Not that it bothers him in the least. Since his parents died, Steven had let the plantation go and everything is in disrepair, which makes it exceedingly easy to set fire to. While the fires are blazing, Steven goes to the barn, where the hidden safe is, and takes all the money he can carry to his saddle bags, then saddles his best horse and rides off into the night, saying to hell with them all.
Steven rides along until he reaches a town where he's sure he won't be recognized, just as he rides through the main road he feels the most awesome headache ever and a man comes out of a bar to look at him. He gasps in surprise as he recognizes William Culbraith, who fought with him under General Lee's orders... only he hadn't changed at all. He invites Culbraith for a drink even though they were never particular friends, and Culbraith ends up telling him what he had become, an Immortal. He also tells him about the Game and offers to teach him some things in rememberence of his uncle.
Steven is enraged when he meets a black Immortal, he thought they weren't entitled to being immortal, and challenges him right away. Culbraith is displeased he made such a move without asking him and leaves telling him he's on his own now and without even caring for the outcome, Culbraith walks off.
When he takes his first Quickening, Steven likes it so much it becomes his reason to live like lynching black people once was, he makes it his reason of living, to hunt and kill all black Immortals.
Several years later, once he takes his first non-black head, Steven realizes it isn't just the joy of ridding the world of another black that he enjoys so much, and he enjoys it more and more each time he does it. It's the Quickening itself he enjoys. And realizing this, he stops hunting blacks and just goes after any Immortal he can find. Steven seems to have the devil's own luck when it comes to locating newbies and prefers them, as they are the easiest to get his next Quickening fix.
So now he travels from city to city taking all the challenges and hunting all new Immortals he can find regardless of color or gender.
